FAQs
How much does it cost?
Nothing. These upgrades are free.
Do I need to own my home to qualify?
Not necessarily!
If your home assessment determines that upgrades involve landlord-owned appliances or insulation, your landlord will be offered the upgrade, and we’ll need their consent before proceeding. Don’t worry, no personal financial information about how you qualified for the program will be shared.
Note:
- Homes that are oil-heated must be owner-occupied to qualify for air-source heat pumps and other major upgrades.
- First Nation households are exempt from this ownership requirement.
What upgrades are included?
It depends! The fastest way to find out what upgrades you’re eligible for is to check your eligibility using our online form.
You may qualify for some or all of the following upgrades:
Free energy-saving items:
- ENERGY STAR® certified light bulbs (LEDs)
- Energy-efficient shower heads and faucet aerators
- A clothes drying rack
- A power bar with a timer
Based on your in-home assessment, you may also be eligible for:
- ENERGY STAR® certified replacement appliances such as a fridge, freezer, and/or dehumidifier
- Insulation upgrades in your walls, attic, or basement, as needed
Cold-climate heat pumps are only available for electrically or oil-heated homes.
How long does it take?
Checking eligibility takes less than two minutes. Upgrades are usually installed within weeks to a few months.
Why check eligibility through EnviroCentre?
Checking your eligibility through EnviroCentre is the fastest and easiest way to take advantage of free energy-saving programs. When you apply through us, we screen all available programs at once and make sure you get every free upgrade you qualify for.
If you’re eligible, you can simply leave your contact details and we’ll get in touch to guide you through the next steps and help with your application.
You can also apply directly through the program websites — either the Energy Affordability Program from Save on Energy or the Home Winterproofing Program from Enbridge Gas. But because EnviroCentre is the local delivery agent for both, checking your eligibility with us first means we can match you to the right program faster and start your upgrades sooner.
What if I don’t qualify?
We’ll explain why and help you explore other supports.
What happens during my in-home assessment?
During your in-home energy assessment, an energy expert will ask you to sign a participant agreement and will verify the documents you provided to confirm your eligibility.
With your permission, the expert will install qualifying upgrades in your home, such as ENERGY STAR® certified LED light bulbs, efficient showerheads and faucet aerators, and a clothes drying rack.
They’ll also ask questions about your appliances and equipment that use electricity and share tips to help you reduce your energy use, lower your bills, and make your home more comfortable.
The expert will check the age and efficiency of your appliances, and if applicable, measure insulation and drafts. They will also take photos of your appliances and the inside and outside of your home as part of the assessment.
If your home qualifies for additional energy-saving upgrades, an expert may return for a second visit at a time that works best for you.
What happens after my in-home assessment?
After your in-home assessment, our team will review the information collected by the energy expert to see if your home qualifies for replacement appliances or insulation upgrades.
If your home is eligible, we’ll contact you by letter or email to let you know the results.
We’ll then work with you to schedule an installation date that fits your schedule. You can choose to accept or decline any of the upgrades offered.
